This one (1) hour course reviews the most significant changes between the 8th Edition (2023) and 9th Edition (2026) Florida Building Code, Building. Moving in chapter sequence, it covers lithium-ion battery and flammable gas hazards, high-rise fire protection, storm shelter and hospital sprinkler coverage, exterior wall fire testing, means-of-egress and school security updates, structural risk categories and live loads, a new statewide saltwater corrosion standard, and updated roofing, temporary structure, and construction site safety requirements.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE OR SKILL OBTAINED
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Identify the new occupancy classifications and fire alarm/hazard mitigation requirements that apply to lithium-ion battery and flammable gas uses.
- Explain the updated high-rise stairway door unlocking requirements, sprinkler riser criteria, elevator lobby fire/smoke enclosure termination points, and smokeproof enclosure fan controls.
- Describe the NFPA 285 testing requirements added for exterior wall assemblies, including the closed combustible-adhesive veneer loophole.
- Recognize the new means-of-egress requirements affecting occupied roofs, guard/handrail measurement, retaining wall guards, glass safety, electrical room panic hardware, and educational occupancy security locking.
- Apply the revised structural risk category, live load, wood framing modification, and flood design provisions to plan review and design.
- Locate and apply the new statewide saltwater corrosion resistance standard (Section 1711) and its cross-references throughout the code.
- Summarize the reorganization of the Steel chapter and the new design requirements for pre-engineered metal building systems and aluminum screen enclosures.
