Professional Development Hours (PDH) Requirements
Illinois professional engineers are required to earn 30 PDH biennially. All of the required hours can be earned through online continuing education courses. EZpdh.com courses are accepted by the Illinois State Board of Professional Engineers. The following table shows a quick rundown of license renewal requirements.
Subject | Requirement |
Hours Required | 30 hours biennially |
Renewal Dates | November 30 of odd-numbered years for Professional Engineers November 30 of even-numbered years for Structural Engineers |
Course Approval | The Board does not require pre-approval for providers or specific courses. Each engineer must determine whether an activity meets the Board’s requirements |
Course Content | No specific guidance or restrictions on course content are provided by the Board. For Professional Engineers, the course must “contribute to the advancement, extension or enhancement of the professional skills and/or scientific knowledge of the licensee in practice of professional engineering” and “foster the enhancement of general or specialized practice and values of professional engineering, related sciences and engineering ethics” For Structural Engineers, the course must “contribute to the advancement, extension or enhancement of the professional skills and scientific knowledge of the licensee in practice of structural engineering” and “foster the enhancement of general or specialized practice and values of structural engineering” |
Online Courses | Accepted. For Professional Engineers, there is no limit on the number of PDHs that can be earned through online continuing education. For Structural Engineers, no more than 10 hours of the 30 hours required may be earned through online continuing education and cannot be used as continuing education for Illinois Structural Engineers |
PDH Carryover | Hours cannot be carried forward into the next renewal period |
