In this course the student will understand the concepts of measuring and modeling solar radiation, the various measurement systems available, satellite-based and operational models, and forecasting Solar Radiation and predicting Photovoltaic Power.Instructor: Juan Pesante, PE


This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Explain the solar constant and total solar irradiance
  • Discuss solar radiation and the earth’s atmosphere
  • Explain the components of solar radiation
  • Explain measuring solar radiation and instrumentation
  • Describe measurement station design considerations
  • Explain modeling solar radiation and estimating irradiance
  • Discuss satellite-based models
  • Identify models used in operational models
  • Explain numerical weather prediction-based solar radiation estimates


You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a 20 question multiple-choice quiz. The quiz can be retaken unlimited times until a passing grade of 70% or better is earned. This course satisfies five (5) hours of professional development (PDH).
