Chillers, Refrigerant Compressors, and Heating Systems: 5 PDH

Preview Course: Chillers & Refrigerants
This course focuses on the equipment and equipment components used to generate heating and cooling. It does not include fans and pumps. This distinction is clear for most equipment types, such as unit heaters, boilers, and chillers. However, for packaged air-conditioning (AC) equipment the distinction can be subtle. Most packaged AC equipment is treated as a unit by performance rating procedures. Hence, separation of the fans is difficult. For this study, only the refrigerant compressors of packaged equipment are considered.

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

    • Accurate estimates of the energy used by primary cooling in the US commercial building sector
    • Accurate estimates of the energy used by primary heating in the US commercial building sector
    • Factors which contribute to energy use by the equipment
    • Baseline estimate of current national energy use
    • Calculation of the national energy savings impact
    • Methods & options for reducing energy usage

South Dakota

Professional Development Hours (PDH) Requirements

South Dakota professional engineers are required to earn 30 PDH biennially. All of the required hours can be earned through online continuing education courses. EZpdh.com courses are accepted by the South Dakota Board of Technical Professions. The following table shows a quick rundown of license renewal requirements.

SubjectRequirement
Hours Required30 hours biennially
Renewal DatesBased on the date of original licensure
Course ApprovalThe Board does not require pre-approval for providers or specific courses. Each engineer must determine whether an activity meets the Board’s requirements
Course ContentAt least 20 PDH must be in technical areas such as design; environmental analysis; programming and planning; structural systems; lateral forces; mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and acoustical systems; construction methods; construction observation; site and soil analyses and design; accessibility; building codes; selection of building materials; and surveying methods and techniques. The remaining 10 PDH may be earned in professional management subjects, such as total quality process, computer courses, or ethics
Online CoursesAccepted. For Professional Engineers, there is no limit on the number of PDHs that can be earned through online continuing education
PDH CarryoverA maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period
Additional
  1. For dual licensees, the number of PDH remains 30 biennially; however, one-third of the required credits must pertain to each profession
