This course also introduces the basic electricity and electrical circuit concepts associated with direct current. Topics include calculation of current, voltage, resistance and power in series, parallel and combination circuits with direct current (DC) power sources.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE OR SKILL OBTAINED
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- How is DC voltage produced and what does an electric circuit consist of
- What is a rectifier and how half-wave bridge rectifiers differ from full-wave bridge rectifiers
- What is the difference between a schematic diagram, one-line diagram, block diagram and wiring diagram
- What is resistivity and how temperature affects the resistance of materials
- What is the difference between open circuit, close circuit, and short circuit
- What primary characteristics identify a series, parallel or a combination circuit
- How to calculate the current and voltage drop in series, parallel or combination circuits
- How to calculate the equivalent resistance for a series, parallel or combination circuit
- What is meant by the terms voltage divider and current division

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a 30 question multiple-choice quiz. The quiz can be retaken unlimited times until a passing grade of 70% or better is earned. This course satisfies 9 professional development hours (PDH) of continuing education.
AC Theory, Circuits, Generators & Motors: 6 PDH
Preview Course: AC Theory, Circuits, Generators & Motors
This course explores the fundamentals of AC circuits, and how, instead of working with pure resistances, the concept of impedance is introduced. AC circuit theory can cause engineers a lot of difficulty; however this course will attempt to make the concept easy to see and understand. Numerous pictures and graphs are used to show the basic fundamentals of how Alternating Current works. This course also details the general theory and equations for AC Circuit analysis, AC generators and AC Motors.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE OR SKILL OBTAINED
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- AC motor theory
- AC motor construction and operation
- AC motor applications and usage
- Transformer theory and design
- Electronic Measuring devices
- Instrument construction
- Distribution systems
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a 20 question multiple-choice quiz. The quiz can be retaken unlimited times until a passing grade of 70% or better is earned. This course satisfies 6 professional development hours (PDH) of continuing education.
Professional Development Hours (PDH) Requirements
Texas professional engineers are required to earn 15 PDH annually. All of the required hours can be earned through online continuing education courses. EZpdh.com courses are accepted by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. The following table shows a quick rundown of license renewal requirements.
Subject | Requirement |
Hours Required | 15 hours annually |
Renewal Dates | March 31, June 30, September 30 or December 31 based on the initial date of licensure |
Course Approval | The Board does not require pre-approval for providers or specific courses. Each engineer must determine whether an activity meets the Board’s requirements |
Course Content | The course must have a “clear purpose and objective which will maintain, improve, or expand the skills and knowledge relevant to the licensee’s field of practice”At least 1 PDH must be earned in Professional Ethics |
Online Courses | Accepted. For Professional Engineers, there is no limit on the number of PDHs that can be earned through online continuing education. |
PDH Carryover | A maximum of 14 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period |
